Lawn mowers have been around since basically the beginning, in the form or sheep, goats, horses or other livestock.  Now that most of us don’t have a yard full of grazers out back we need useful lawn mowers to keep the grass and weeds down to acceptable limits, lest we lose Skippy the poodle, or the neighbors complain.  Actually, losing the poodle wouldn’t be so bad.

Quality push lawn mowers are produced by all the top names you know, including John Deere, Honda, Lawn Boy, Snapper and many more.  Most push lawn mowers feature Briggs & Stratton or Tecumseh engines which is frankly a bigger factor than the name on the lawn mowers housing.  Those engines are dependable and buying new or used lawn mowers sporting those proven engines is a good choice.  Honda engines are known for reliability as well, so you’ve got good options. 

If you have a larger lawn you may want to keep the push lawn mower to use as a trim mower and select one of the top riding lawn mowers on the market to get most of the work done.  Leading makers of riding lawn mowers include Husky, John Deere, Cub Cadet, Poulan and Bowens.  Factors to consider include engine size and the width of the mowing deck.  The larger the engine size the tougher the work.  If you let the grass get long or if it is extra thick or contains a lot of weeds, then an 18-24 horsepower engine will drive the blades through the grass more easily without bogging down.  If you sport mulching blades you’ll also appreciate a more powerful engine.  Otherwise, a 12-16 horsepower engine will be sufficient.  Also, if you plan to pull a lawn roller or use a snow attachment in the winter a larger engine will handle the work more efficiently.

Concerning the lawn mowers cutting deck, wide open spaces are great for wider decks, up to 54 inches.  If you’ve got narrow passages between trees or around obstacles a 36-42 inch cut might work better.  Take a few moments before you shop for lawn mowers to consider the right type of machine, an essential first step in find the one that will serve you well for years to come.
